Electric Rasa vehicle powered
by a hydrogen cell in the boot is 'safer than petrol cars' thanks to a
specially designed pressurised tank
Named after the Latin for 'clean-slate', the
futuristic-looking Rasa (pictured right) has been developed by engineers
and entrepreneurs based in Llandrindod Wells, Wales and runs on a
hydrogen fuel cell (pictured left). There are no gears, just buttons for
forward, neutral or reverse, plus an accelerator pedal and brake. Its
makers claim the car is safer than petrol because the gas is contained
in a pressurised tank. Even if it did leak in a crash, the gas would
dissipate upwards rather than 'pool' under the vehicle as is the case
with unleaded. It accelerates from zero to 60mph (97km/h) - the city
car's top speed - in 10 seconds and has a fuel consumption equivalent of
250 miles per gallon. Initial plans are to lease thousands of the
vehicles to customers on service contracts for about £500 per month -
rather than selling them outright.
